Fabian Krämer’s Research Interests

I am currently based at the Italian Academy for Advanced Studies in America at Columbia University, where I have been working on a research project that centres on reconstructing the reading and note taking practices of the eminent Italian natural historian Ulisse Aldrovandi (1522-1605). This research grew out of my more general interest in the circulation of bits of knowledge both visual and textual in early modern natural history and medicine.

Relevant Publications:

“Hermaphrodites Closely Observed: The Individualisation of Hermaphrodites and the Rise of the observatio genre in Seventeenth-Century Medicine,” in: L’Hermaphrodite de la Renaissance aux Lumières, edited by Marianne Closson, Paris: Garnier, 2012 (forthcoming).

“Faktoid und Fallgeschichte: Medizinische Fallgeschichten im Lichte frühneuzeitlicher Lese- und Aufzeichnungstechniken,” in: Die Sachen der Aufklärung, edited by Frauke Bernd and Daniel Fulda, Hamburg: Meiner, 2012 (forthcoming).

“The Persistent Image of an Unusual Centaur: A Biography of Aldrovandi’s Two-Legged Centaur Woodcut,” Nuncius XXIV, no. 2 (2009): 313-340.

“Die Individualisierung des Hermaphroditen in Medizin und Naturgeschichte des 17. Jahrhunderts,” Berichte zur Wissenschaftsgeschichte 30, no. 1 (2007): 49-65.
